France’s Private Jet Tax (Effective March 2025)
Private jet travellers departing from French airports will pay between €210 and €2,100 per passenger in new taxes.
France has introduced a new tax on private jet departures from its airports, aimed at addressing budget deficits and promoting more eco-friendly travel.
How the Tax Works
- Based on Distance and Aircraft Type: The amount charged depends on the distance of the flight and the type of aircraft used.
Flight Range |
Turboprops | Jet Aircraft |
Within Europe | €210 per passenger | €420 per passenger |
Medium Distance (1,000–5,500 km) | €675 per passenger | €1,015 per passenger |
Long-Haul (5,500+ km) | €1,025 per passenger | €2,100 per passenger |
- VAT Rules: A 10% value-added tax is applied to domestic flights, but international flights are exempt.
- Who It Applies To: All unscheduled private flights leaving French airports, including empty repositioning flights, are subject to this tax.
- Responsibility: Private jet companies are now required to collect and pay the tax. Failure to do so could result in penalties.
What It Means for Travellers
- Higher Travel Costs: The additional fees—up to €2,100 per passenger on long-haul flights—will increase the total cost of private air travel.
- Changes in Operations: Jet companies might adjust routes or pricing to cope with the added expense.
Environmental Motivation: This tax is part of a broader effort to reduce emissions by curbing private jet usage and promoting more environmentally friendly alternatives.
